Project Info
This website is a developmental blog for a novel that I am building. I am primarily interested in creating an archival record of how the work develops over time and how my own ideas and attempts to communicate the story evolve over time. The website is a sort of living notebook/digital workshop type space.
The work is inspired heavily by the gothic tradition and unfolds over three parts, each with a different narrator. All three deal in some way with the relationship between power structures, love, and the gendered relationship to labour in its many forms. I am developing this work and posting it as I feel ready, it is not a web-serial and will not be posted sequentially or on any particular schedule. For some reason I find whenever I post something many ideas for changes otherwise become apparent to me, which honestly helps my revision process more than intrinsic motivation ever has (lol).
I do offer my own notes on scenes on the outline page. Some are notes for a later revision, others are dramaturgical in nature. Depends on my thinking at the time, there’s no real rhyme or reason to it. My thought was that perhaps this will give anyone reading an idea of how someone else approaches storytelling.
My own “process” (generously calling whatever I’m doing here a process) is this: I have two notebooks going at any given time. One for handwritten prose, another for bullet point ideas. The prose eventually gets transferred into my Scrivener, or the bullet-pointed idea gets translated into prose on Scrivener. From there it gets edited and I move on. Once I have the full story built, or perhaps a complete part, I will post a full compiled version for anyone interested.
Feel free to contact me through the contact form. I do not offer writing advice or beta reading. Should you like to contact me through a different channel, I am also on Tumblr: www.wa1king-in-the-sun.tumblr.com. I do not maintain accounts on any other social media platforms. Thanks for reading!
About the Author
I am a 28 year old PhD Candidate in Ontario, Canada. Previously I lived in southern Alberta and northern British Columbia in many different small towns. Most of my family is in Prince Rupert, Terrace, and the surrounding area. I am autistic and also a woman. I was diagnosed late and so I am still figuring out how the autism interacts with my own identity. This probably informs how I write but I don’t yet have language for the specifics.
While growing up I wrote a lot of fan-fiction. Mostly Hunger Games, Boy band stuff. If you can believe it, it was a lot of hurt/comfort, angst (sometimes with a happy ending sometimes not), etc. While my graduate training is in the humanities (musicology, dramaturgy), I do not have any formal creative writing training. When I am not working on my PhD, I frequently do design work for theater and opera. Mostly props but also some set design and costume work.
